Life Insurance with Endometriosis in Ireland (2026 Guide)

10-second summary: In Ireland, uncomplicated endometriosis rarely affects life insurance or mortgage protection pricing. Most applicants are accepted at standard rates. Income protection may include a condition-specific exclusion.

Editor’s note (2026): This guide was originally published in 2016 and has been fully updated to reflect current Irish underwriting practice.

If you’ve been diagnosed with endometriosis and you’re applying for mortgage protection in Ireland, you’re probably wondering whether it will affect your cover.

In most cases, it won’t.

Endometriosis is a chronic condition, but it isn’t life-threatening. As Irish life insurers primarily focus on mortality risk, uncomplicated endometriosis rarely affects pricing.

With Zurich, Royal London, Aviva, New Ireland and Irish Life, straightforward cases are normally accepted at standard rates for:

That’s the typical underwriting position in 2026.

When Might It Affect an Application?

It becomes relevant only where there are complications. For example:

  • Multiple surgeries with complications
  • Severe symptoms requiring repeated hospital admissions
  • Associated medical conditions
  • Significant time off work
  • Upcoming or follow-up investigations.

Even then, we’re usually dealing with clarification rather than decline.

What Irish Insurers Will Ask

The questions are predictable and clinical. They’ll want to know:

  • When you were diagnosed
  • Severity of symptoms
  • Surgery history
  • Current medication
  • Whether you’re under consultant follow-up

They’re only assessing stability.

Does It Matter Which Insurer You Apply To?

In uncomplicated cases, most Irish insurers behave similarly.

However, insurers don’t assess risk in the same way. The order you apply in still matters because once a decision is made, that outcome has to be disclosed to future insurers.

Being accepted doesn’t always mean you achieved the best possible terms.

If the insurer adds a loading, it’s not the same as getting cover at the normal price or at a lower loading.

If an application is submitted poorly and unnecessary information is triggered, you can create friction that didn’t need to exist.

That’s why we review cases anonymously first, even where the condition is usually straightforward.

Mortgage Protection and Drawdown

If you’re buying a home in Ireland, your bank requires mortgage protection before drawdown.

Endometriosis, on its own, will almost never prevent a drawdown.

The goal is simply to present the medical history clearly so the application moves smoothly and without delay.

Income Protection Is Different

Income protection assesses the risk of you being unable to work due to a health issue.

Because endometriosis can involve pain-related absence, insurers may apply an exclusion for claims directly related to the condition.

That doesn’t make the policy pointless.

It just means that claims specifically related to endometriosis may not be covered bu everything else remains insured.
