Life Insurance After a Stent in Ireland (2026 Guide)

10-second summary: Yes, you can often get life insurance or mortgage protection after a stent in Ireland. Most insurers want 6–12 months of stability, good follow-up reports and controlled risk factors. The biggest mistake is applying to the wrong insurer first because a decline must be disclosed on future applications.

Having a stent fitted doesn’t automatically mean you’ll be declined for life insurance or mortgage protection in Ireland.

What matters is why it was fitted, how long ago, how well you’ve recovered, and which insurer assesses your application.

With heart conditions, insurers assess risk differently.

The order you apply in matters.

A decline can affect your options going forward.

When Will Insurers Consider You?

Most Irish insurers want to see a period of stability after the procedure. If your stent was fitted less than six months ago, you’ll usually be postponed. Once you’re six to twelve months post-procedure, with no complications and good follow-up reports, they can consider cover.

They aren’t just looking at the procedure itself.

They want to see

  • which vessel was stented
  • degree of stenosis
  • thew state of the other vessels
  • stable cardiac tests
  • no ongoing chest pain
  • no new symptoms
  • evidence that your cardiologist is satisfied with your recovery.

What Insurers Actually Focus On

Underwriters look beyond the word “stent”.

They’ll assess whether it followed a heart attack, angina, or was discovered during screening.

They’ll look at how many arteries were involved, which vessels were treated, how severe the blockages were, and what condition the remaining arteries are in.

Your current health also matters.

  • medication
  • blood pressure
  • cholesterol control
  • smoking status
  • weight
  • and overall lifestyle

all feed into the risk assessment.

Factors such as smoking or uncontrolled blood pressure can increase premiums further.

Stenting relieves symptoms. It doesn’t cure coronary artery disease. Insurers are pricing long-term risk, not the success of the operation alone.

What Does It Cost?

If cover is offered, life insurance is normally approved with a loading.

As a rough guide, premiums often start at around double the standard rate. That can be lower in straightforward cases and higher where multiple vessels were affected or other risk factors remain.

The difference between insurers can be significant so being accepted isn’t the same as getting the best outcome.

Who Is More Likely To Be Postponed?

You’re more likely to be postponed if you’re under 40, if the stent was fitted recently, if there are ongoing symptoms, or if there’s widespread coronary disease still present.

Applicants over 40 who are more than six to twelve months post-procedure, have had no complications, and have their risk factors under control are often considered.

Every case is individual.

Two people with a stent can receive very different outcomes depending on the wider picture.

What About Income Protection?

Income protection is assessed more strictly than life cover because it insures your ability to work, not just mortality risk.

It’s unlikely unfortunately.

Serious illness cover may be possible with an exclusion for heart related claims

The Biggest Mistake People Make

Applying directly to a bank or insurer without understanding how your case will be viewed.

If you receive a formal decline, that decision must be disclosed on every future application.  Even insurers who might otherwise have considered your case will see that history first and may raise an eyebrow as to why another insurer has refused cover.

With heart conditions, applying incorrectly can narrow your options.

That’s why the order you apply in matters.
