While better than nothing, the deadline to file federal flood proofs of loss has been extended to 120 days from the flooding of Hurricane Helene. It should have been for a year, as was common following catastrophic hurricanes.
Here is the language granting the extension:
To allow enough time for policyholders to evaluate their losses, I am extending the 60-day proof of loss deadline to 120 days. The deadline for submitting a compliant proof of loss for Hurricane Helene is 120 calendar days from the date of loss.
The National Flood Insurance Program is in need of reform by Congress. One of the significant changes should be an anti-technicality provision so that the form over claim substance allows policyholders to be paid what they are fully owed without having to be nit-picked to death about the wording of details.
I am certain that Amy Bach of United Policyholders and Doug Quinn of the American Policyholder Association support these calls for reform. I urge others to join us by joining these organizations and writing Congressional delegations to put fairness and common sense back into the treatment of policyholders who have already suffered catastrophic flooding loss.
