Cheers to 60: Celebrating TuGo’s 60th Anniversary

The day has finally come – it’s our 60th anniversary! TuGo has officially been in business for 60 years. To celebrate, we’re taking a walk down memory lane, to bring us back to our roots, where it all began in 1964.

1960s

In 1964, Herb & Georgina Robinson start North American Air Travel Insurance Agents Ltd., which becomes the first Canadian travel insurance company to offer missed flight insurance.

1970s

The company rebrands as “Travel Underwriters” (TU), and continues to break barriers in the industry, being the first to market with annual hospital and medical insurance.

1980s

With Georgina leading the company with a goal to employ women re-entering the workforce, the team grows to over 50 employees.

Due to cutbacks in funding out of province medical costs by provincial government health plans, market opportunity begins to accelerate; and with it, so does Travel Underwriters.

1990s

The company acquires competitor, TravelSure, and launches innovative ‘TravelGold’ product for out-of-province coverage. While big corporations dominate the market, TU opens sales offices in Montreal and Toronto, and the family’s second generation takes on leadership roles.

2000s

With a bilingual national presence, TU becomes one of the first insurance providers to sell travel insurance online. This decade brings 9/11, SARS and the 2008 financial crisis, but prudent decision-making ensures TU’s survival.

2010s

Privately owned & operated as a 2nd generation business, the company rebrands to TuGo in 2015. TuGo is awarded one of Canada’s Best Managed Companies, and finalist for Underwriter/Travel Insurance of the Year and Excellence in Philanthropy & Community Service.

2020s

In spite of the COVID-19’s travel impact, TuGo continues to be responsive, innovative, and socially responsible, with nearly 150 diverse and highly capable employees across Canada. Thank you for your support and loyalty over the years. We look forward to supporting you in your travels, in our 60th year and beyond!
