10-second summary: If you have coeliac disease and it’s well controlled, you will usually get life insurance at normal rates in Ireland. The only time it becomes tricky is shortly after diagnosis or if there are complications.
Editor’s note: First published in 2016 | Fully updated in 2026 to reflect current Irish underwriting practices.
If you’ve been diagnosed with coeliac disease and are applying for life insurance or mortgage protection, the first thing most people worry about is simple:
“Will this affect my chances of getting cover?”
The good news is that in most cases, it won’t.
Can You Get Life Insurance with Coeliac Disease?
Yes — most people with coeliac disease can get life insurance at standard rates.
If your condition is:
- Controlled with a gluten-free diet
- Free from complications
- And stable
Then insurers generally treat you the same as someone without the condition.
This applies to both mortgage protection and standard life insurance.
When Can It Be More Difficult?
There are two situations where underwriting can be more cautious:
- Recent diagnosis (typically within the last 6–12 months)
- Complications such as anaemia, ongoing gastrointestinal symptoms, or poor control
In these cases, an insurer may:
- Postpone your application temporarily
- Request additional medical information
This isn’t a decline — it just means they want to see that things have settled.
What Do Insurers Look At?
When assessing an application, insurers will typically look at:
- When you were diagnosed
- Whether your condition is controlled by diet
- Any history of symptoms or complications
- Results of any investigations
If everything is stable, the process is usually straightforward and often doesn’t require a GP report.
How Much Does Life Insurance with Coeliac Disease Cost?
In the best-case scenario — which is the most common — you’ll pay the same price as someone without coeliac disease.
If there are complications, the insurer will assess things on a case-by-case basis, but many applicants still receive normal terms.
What About Serious Illness Cover and Income Protection?
If your coeliac disease is well controlled, you can often get normal terms for:
- Serious illness cover
- Income protection
If there are complications, terms will depend on the severity and medical history.
Do You Need to Be Careful When Applying?
Yes — this part matters more than most people realise.
Even with a straightforward condition like coeliac disease, insurers don’t all view cases the same way.
If you apply to the wrong insurer first and get postponed, that decision can influence how other insurers assess you.
That’s why it’s worth getting it right the first time.
