Firefighters Getting Handle on California Blaze That Threatened Malibu

Firefighters are getting a better handle on a California wildfire that was threatening the city of Malibu as the winds that fanned the flames begin to subside.

The Franklin Fire is now 30% contained and has burned 4,037 acres, according to Cal Fire. It had been less than 10% contained two days earlier.

The fire grew rapidly since breaking out on Monday, driven by dry conditions and seasonal Santa Ana winds.

The fire had prompted power outages to thousands of customers and evacuations orders or warnings were issued for 20,000 residents.

Southern California Edison said it has restored power to the city, and some evacuation orders are being lifted.

Some roads are now open, but several road and highway closer remain in place.

Throughout the day, fire activity remained minimal, and no significant fire growth occurred,” CalFire said in its latest update. “The fire continues to smolder in steep and very dangerous terrain. Aerial suppression efforts in those areas have been successful in keeping the fire subdued. Cooler weather, higher humidities, as well as the absence of strong winds have assisted firefighting efforts. Damage inspections are ongoing. Priority remains to repopulate evacuated areas as quickly and efficiently safe to do so.”

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
