Are people insured with CURE Auto Insurance in Michigan driving with significantly less protection than drivers insured with other insurance companies?
In a word: YES.
CURE Auto Insurance has repeatedly boasted that 94% of its drivers select less than the unlimited No-Fault PIP medical coverage option. Only 6% of CURE drivers have unlimited PIP medical coverage to pay for necessary medical care if they are seriously injured in a car accident.
That 6% puts CURE drastically out of step with the rest of the industry.
62% to 72% of all Michigan drivers who purchase auto insurance have the unlimited PIP medical coverage option, according to the Detroit Free Press and the Insurance Alliance of Michigan.
The Detroit Free Press reports that only 38% of all Michigan drivers select less than unlimited PIP medical.
The Insurance Alliance of Michigan — the primary trade group for insurers doing business in the state — states that just “over 28%” of Michigan drivers choose a level of medical coverage less than unlimited.
What CURE CEO Eric Poe Says About Insurance Agents Who Recommend Full Coverage
CURE Auto Insurance’s CEO, Eric Poe, has claimed in media interviews that insurance agents recommend unlimited Michigan No-Fault PIP medical coverage to increase their commissions. To learn more, check out the whenCUREwontpay.com website
This is an incredibly reckless and dangerous thing for Eric Poe to say.
When Eric Poe says this, understand that he is playing a dangerous game with his customer’s lives, health, finances, and future. A CURE Auto Insurance customer based in Michigan who relies on Poe’s statements is being put at terrible risk.
Nobody expects to be in a life-altering crash.
But it does happen — every single day. I’ve been an auto accident attorney for 30 years, and I see firsthand what happens to people who suffer very serious injuries from car crashes but who were driving “under-insured” (meaning the amount of PIP they purchased is insufficient for the medical care they need).”
For these people – those without health insurance and those who have health insurance that has auto accident exclusions or health insurance that limits the necessary medical care that people can receive from a car accident, driving “under-insured” means the PIP medical will run out before these people can receive all the medical care and treatment they need.
Once the PIP medical runs out, these people are stuck paying out of pocket. All too often, this leads to crushing medical debt and, too often, people are forced to declare personal bankruptcy.
Yes, people have every right to choose a lower level of medical coverage, and they often do choose lower PIP medical coverage for financial reasons. I’m fine with that – but that choice should be made only after they’re fully informed of the consequences of what driving “under-insured” really means.
When Eric Poe says that insurance agents recommend unlimited medical coverage to get higher commissions, that’s not fully informing people. That’s playing a dangerous game of Russian Roulette with his own customers’ lives . . . just to sell more insurance.
What PIP level should drivers select?
I always recommend unlimited PIP medical coverage to all of my family, friends, and clients.
Yes, it can be more expensive. But often the savings are much less than you might think (I will be writing another blog soon about CURE Auto Insurance’s purported savings). And any savings from choosing a PIP medical limit less than the unlimited medical option vanishes if you or a loved one is ever badly hurt in a car accident.
Unlimited PIP is the most comprehensive protection for drivers and their families. It ensures that you and your loved ones won’t face the terrifying possibility of not being able to receive all the critically necessary medical care you need after a serious accident – and the financial devastation from mounting medical bills when the lower level of PIP medical runs out.
If you think because you have health insurance that it will cover ALL of your crash-related medical expenses, think again. Many health insurance policies come with strict limits on care. Many health insurance policies put strict limits and caps on the number of doctor visits and therapy visits, or they come with expensive co-pays and deductibles and uncovered medical treatments – especially for traumatic brain injury and spinal cord injuries – that unlimited PIP medical would pay in full.
The bottom line: that 94% number of CURE insureds who have less than unlimited medical coverage is nothing to boast and brag about.
CURE Auto Insurance is drastically out of step with the rest of the industry (and it isn’t because insurance agents are steering people to unlimited medical coverage for higher commissions, Mr. Poe).
